6 Reasons to Eat Less Meat and Dairy

There are so many reasons to enjoy a plant-based diet instead of a traditional Western one. Here are just a few reminders to get you fired up about staying the course or making the switch!

1. A plant-based diet keeps you lean.

Vegetarians typically weigh less than meat eaters because they consume fewer calories. This is because a vegetarian diet emphasizes eating mostly grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, fruits and vegetables. By filling up on these nutrient-dense foods, you'll have less room for processed and sugary foods.

2. Eating a plant-based diet helps with digestive disorders.

Your immune system is primarily in your gut. Therefore it’s extremely important to keep your G.I. healthy. Many people suffer from an allergic reaction to dairy products and experience lactose intolerance.

Lactose Intolerance usually happens as one gets older but can affect anyone. If you are sensitive to dairy, eating it can cause inflammation of your digestive track and can lead to issues including irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease.

Depending upon the condition, probiotics and increasing your fiber intake will usually help. Meat is harder on your digestive track, due to the time it takes to digest, the fact that it creates more acid secretion in the stomach, and leads to more active enzymes secreted by the pancreas.

If you believe that you have problems with either meat and/or dairy, simply remove them from your diet and see how you feel.

3. A plant-based diet fights disease.

When done right, many vegetarian diets are naturally low in fat, saturated fat and cholesterol, which reduces heart-disease.

4. You'll save money.

Plant foods tend to be less expensive, which means that you'll save on overall costs… especially if you're fresh and in-season fruits and vegetables!

5. It's better for the world.

It takes up to ten pounds of grain to produce just one pound of animal flesh. This means that the same amount of crops that feed 100 could possibly feed 1,000 people on a vegetarian diet. So choosing to decrease your meat intake could result in those fields to be used to grow food items. A plant-based diet is also better for the planet because it requires less energy and farmland.

6. You'll live longer and better.

Vegetarians have been found to enjoy longer, healthier lives when compared to meat eaters. They also have less depression and fewer mood disorders.

Whether you decide to cut out meat and dairy altogether or just experiment by adding in a more plant based nutrition plan: your body and the planet will thank you!

Foods To Avoid If You Want To Be Happy

As I continue to research the food-mood connection, a few glaring topics keep coming to the forefront. One biggie is the notion that, just as there are foods that help your mood, there are also foods that are total emotional whammies. When it comes to the latter, most food-related mood issues can be linked to either blood sugar or food sensitivities and intolerance.

Things that screw with your blood sugar.

Blood sugar instability is undeniably linked to mood issues, including depression, anxiety, irritability, and other not-so-great stuff. This should come as no surprise to you if, like me, you get hangry (hungry plus angry) if it's been too long since your last meal. There are a lot of things we can do to help stabilize our blood sugar, including timing of meals, supplements, and types of food. The most important substances to avoid here are (drumroll) ... no big surprise.

Sugar. Alcohol. Caffeine. These three offenders can really mess you up. All three interfere with our body's absorption of vitamins and minerals (including some really important ones for mood stability, like magnesium and B vitamins). Both caffeine and sugar stimulate our adrenal glands to release adrenaline, which is a stress hormone great for getting us out of immediate danger, but not great when we're just living our daily lives.

You know that rush and crash associated with all three? Yeah, it turns out it's not so good for our happiness. Alcohol messes with our seratonin levels (one of our feel-good neurotransmitters), which is why we already know it as a "depressant." And all three contribute to crappy sleep, which, duh, can lead to feeling sad, irritable and tired.

Things to which you are allergic, sensitive, or intolerant.

This is another big one, and I certainly can't do it justice in a few paragraphs. Suffice it to say that food sensitivities, allergies, and intolerances greatly impact our emotions. For instance, celiac disease is associated with an 80% increased risk for depression. Eighty percent!

And you don't need to have CD for gluten to mess with you. Highly allergenic foods like gluten and dairy wreak havoc on our digestive systems, which are so completely intertwined with your brain it's scary. They interfere with nutrient absorption and activate our body's immune response, causing changes to our hormones and neurotransmitters. If you suspect you have a food sensitivity, get it checked out, or find a cool food pro like me to help you go on an elimination diet, stat!

Lastly, it's no coincidence that all of these reactions also lead to inflammation in the body, a major cause of nearly every serious and chronic illness out there. It's also no coincidence that alcohol, sugar, caffeine, gluten and dairy are pretty much THE most difficult things to stop drinking and eating. Kind of like addictive drugs. If ever there were food for thought, this would be it!

9 famous quotes that are (technically) grammatically incorrect

"The game isn’t over till it’s over." -Yogi Berra
1. To boldly go where no man has gone before. This line (and its newer version, with no one in place of no man) is as famous for being "wrong" as it is for being from the intro to each episode of Star Trek.
What's "wrong"? It's a "split infinitive," with boldly improperly between to and go.
Is it really wrong? No. The "rule" against split infinitives is just a grammatical superstition. It was invented in the 1700s by a grammarian who wanted to "improve" the language along Latin lines. English, however, is not Latin, and the option of putting words between to and the verb root has always existed and has often been made use of by respected authors. There are times when a sentence works better if you don't do it, sure; that doesn't make it a rule, and the Star Trek line is not one of those times, either. "Boldly to go"? "To go boldly"? No.
2. The woods are lovely, dark and deep. / But I have promises to keep, / And miles to go before I sleep, / And miles to go before I sleep. This is from "Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening," by Robert Frost.
What's "wrong"? It starts a new sentence right before a conjunction ("But...").
Is it really wrong? No. It has always been an option in English to start sentences with conjunctions, and the most respected authors in the language have done so on occasion to good effect.
3. This was the most unkindest cut of all.Marc Antony says this in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar.
What's "wrong"? Double superlative: most unkindest.

Why babies in every country on Earth say 'mama'

Lazy baby mouths + breasts = "Mama"
Every language has a word for water. In Swahili they call it maji. In  Danish, it's vand. The Japanese say mizu. Even though these words describe the most common and plentiful life-giving substance on Earth, they have nothing in common linguistically. But why should they, evolving as they did on three separate continents among people with incredibly diverse histories and traditions?
But there is a word, and only one, spoken the same way in nearly every language known to humankind. That word, of course, is "mama."
"Mama" is a universal word, describing the woman who gave us the most cherished love in our most vulnerable state. Almost every language boasts a recognizable form of it. While it's true that most languages vary when it comes to the formal word mother, the intimate mama stays the same in each language.
But "mama" doesn't spring from love. It happens because of two things: Lazy little baby mouths, and boobs.
The definitive study on "mama and papa" as universal terms was conducted by Russian linguist Roman Jakobson. He explained that the easiest vocalizations for a human to make are open-mouth vowel sounds. Babies can make vowel sounds (cries) from day one. And they do. Constantly. As they begin to experiment with making other noises, babies will test some of the easier consonant sounds. Usually they start with the sounds made with closed lips, or "labial sounds" such as /m/ /p/ /b/. Babies summon their energy to push out that new consonant sound "MMMM" and then relax into an open mouth vowel, usually "ah" — which is the easiest. When you combine that with a baby's natural repetition in speech, or "babbling," you get " ma-ma", "ba-ba" "pa-pa," and so on.
So why do babies gravitate to the "m" sound instead of "p" or "b"? Because of breasts, of course! The "m" sound is the easiest for a baby mouth to make when wrapped around a warm delicious breast. Even as adults, we still associate "mmm" with something being yummy and good. So does your baby.
Jakobson's work suggest that your baby has no idea your name is Mama, (or Dada for that matter). Mama doesn't mean "I love you, sweet angel-woman, sacrificer of sleep, career, and buttock firmness." It means "food."
So when a baby calls its father "mama," and gets increasingly disturbed when the father does not become mama, the child is not actually asking for its mother. The child is recognizing that the hairy flat-chested lunk trying to sing "Little Bird" to it is NOT Primary Food Dispersal Unit #1. And Primary Food Dispersal Unit #1, or the suitable latex substitute she usually holds, should be brought forth as quickly as possible.
The Jakobson study predates the feminist movement, and doesn't touch much on the role of men as primary care givers. We can assume the same pattern of speech develops, but is re-arranged through parental guidance, so that a baby soon learns that saying "da da" will bring food, even if no boobs are involved.
Parents encourage the baby's speech, and help refine its inflection to their particular language. Soon "mama" and "papa" begin to represent the actual people in the child's life, no matter how diverse those lives are. So whether or not the child wakes at night asking for vand, mizu, or maji, it will likely be Mama they're asking to get it.
