Lagos Warns Of Heavier Rains Accompanied With Thunderstorm In July
In a statement on Sunday by the State Commissioner of the Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello, Lagosians were urged to adhere to the advice as it was imperative to ensure their safety as the rainy season approached its peak, following reports from the Nigeria Meteorological Agency.
“Rainfall intensity is expected in July but Lagosians are advised not to panic. There is a need for residents to be safety conscious during this period.
“Residents are advised to avoid driving through flooded areas as there might be difficulty in judging its depth.
“Do not drive on high speed and ensure that your vehicles are in good condition. Except only on compulsory occasions, avoid going out during rainy seasons,” the statement said.
Bello said the rains in Lagos were expected to be of high intensity with accompanying wind and thunderstorms in July.
“Due to the rains since January, the water level of the soil has increased causing low infiltration capacity across the state. This has resulted in the saturation of the soil, causing delayed discharge of rain water into the water bodies,” he noted.
Bello said Lagos, as a coastal state, was susceptible to flash floods in times of heavy rains but added that the flood would be effectively discharged into channels that had been cleaned in anticipation of the rains.
He added that the government had intensified its cleaning and maintenance programme, and would not relent until zero tolerance for flooding was attained in the state.
June ended with rains throughout the day, and into the night in most parts of Lagos, bringing to fore NMA’s warnings earlier in the year about the volume of rainfall to be expected in Lagos this year.
27-year-old Actor Arrested For Abducting Monarch’s Wife
Ismaila Dauda, a 27-year-old secondary school dropout, has been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command for an alleged abduction.
However, Dauda said he was not aware that he was part of a gang of kidnappers until too late.
He said, “At the time, I was not aware that it was a planned abduction. Segun is a close friend and had borrowed my car. Because the car was without a spare tyre and not in good condition, I offered to drive him wherever he wanted.
“I was under the impression that Segun was in search of a suitable school for his teaching practice as he is a student of a College of Education,” Dauda said.
Dauda, Segun and Nurudeen allegedly left Ondo, while a fourth unidentified man was picked up at Ore. Under Segun’s direction, Dauda allegedly drove to a secondary school close to the palace of the Oba of Ilisan in Ogun State.
At about 1pm, an elderly lady was said to have driven out of the school compound and headed in the direction of the king’s palace.
Their victim was bundled into Dauda’s waiting car and driven away. Some residents, however, raised the alarm and alerted the police after witnessing the abduction.
“It seemed Segun had stationed some spies around because while I was driving, he received a call that the police had already begun to give a chase behind us and that the neighbourhod vigilantes had mobilised ahead of us to block our escape.
“Immediately, I heard that, I could no longer drive. I was so scared, I had to drive off the road into the bush and we abandoned my car there with the king’s wife in it,” Dauda recalled.
Dauda and his friends, allegedly hid in the bush till 7pm until Segun’s spies showed up and took them all to an uncompleted building at the Ijebu-Ode end of Sagamu-Benin Expressway. The suspects were said to have hidden there till 6.30am the following day, when a vehicle arrived to convey them back to Ondo state.
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, confirming the incident said, “The victim was rescued from the car unhurt although some pepper had been sprayed into her eyes to prevent her from identifying where she was to be held captive.
“All the suspects escaped from the scene. In their haste, a sim card belonging to Dauda was left in the car.
“Dauda was tracked to his home in Ondo State but he had gone into hiding in his hometown, Iwo. It wasn’t until May 19 that Dauda returned home and he was promptly arrested by the Fagun Police Division and later transferred to the State Criminal Investigative Department, Abeokuta. Investigation is on to apprehend the other fleeing suspects.” [Punch]
Sorry, FG Cannot Pay Compensation To Victims Of Boko Haram Attacks – Presidential C’ttee
However, he revealed that families of security operatives who lost their lives in the line of duty while battling the insurgents, would be paid compensation.
Turaki said, “Government cannot pay compensation but it will support victims. It will compensate military personnel that were affected by this insurgency.
“Government will not have the capacity to give compensation because of the number of victims involved in the insurgency incidents”.
Turaki, who led other members of the committee to the conference, also tasked Muslim leaders, among them the Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the JNI, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, to appeal to the Boko Haram sect to lay down their arms and come to the dialogue table, adding that Islam, as a religion, encourages dialogue.
He said, “How do you compensate somebody who has lost family members? How much will you compensate him with when he is battling with the psychological effect of the incidents?”
The Minister told the gathering that his team was at the conference to impress it upon the leadership of the JNI to talk to the sect on the need for dialogue, saying since Boko Haram believed in Islam, its members should also imbibe the tenets of the religion.
Turaki maintained that there was no crisis or difference that could not be resolved via dialogue.
He said, “So, we beg for prayers because there is no evil that prayer cannot solve.
“No matter the ideology of Boko Haram, it is twisted towards Islam. It is very unfortunate. We therefore want this conference to examine the immediate and remote causes of the growing insurgency in the region.”
“So far, we have had robust discussions with Muslim leaders, government officials, traditional rulers and clerics.
“We pray this conference will call on them to come out and embrace dialogue. If you are using the name of the Prophet, then there is room for dialogue. It is respectful to come and dialogue; we are all ready for dialogue.”
He added, “Even wars in other countries of the world, and coming back home, the Biafra/Nigeria civil war, provided an opportunity for dialogue because it is not war that bring peace, but dialogue. So, let them give peace a chance, and let them embrace dialogue.”
