An old woman drove her car into the ocean and nearly died, according to reports.

An elderly woman escaped almost certain death after an unknown group bravely jumped into the sea to save her after her car crashed into the water.

The local newspaper reported that 84-year-old Ursula Nixon lost control of her car, driving through two fences and driving her blue Nissan into the water. "It seemed to happen very quickly," said

Michael Wells, one member of the rescue team, according to the newspaper. "I saw her go over the edge and then splashed water."

Katie Nelson was the first in the water, climbing on top of the vehicle and then climbing through the rear window of the car to pull Nixon to safety. "I just remember pulling myself up and looking at her and there was water all in the front of the car and she was in the front seat," Nelson told the news media. "I said, 'Hi, I'm Katie, and she's like,' I do not want to die here, I'll drown. And I'm like, 'No, no, you're not. You'll grab my hand and we're going out."

In a video taken of the rescue, the car falls below the ocean surface moments after lifeguards pulled Nixon out of the vehicle.
Luckily for Nixon, two police officers were nearby, along with a group of firefighters who were in the middle of rescue training exercises.

After Wells left the car with Nixon, Lt. Robert Slaving swam to shore with Nixon. She was then taken to Maine Medical Center where she was listed as being in good condition.

About 30 people joined the rescue effort. No one was seriously injured, although several people were treated for hypothermia. Police are still investigating the exact cause of the accident.

"Her only concern when she left the water was if she hurt anyone," Wells told the news media.
