Address grievances of INEC officials, stakeholders urge Jega

Stakeholders in Ekiti State have advised the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, to ensure that the welfare of officials of the commission is well taken care of to ensure success of 2014  election in the state.
Representatives of the Nigeria Bar Association,Action Congress of  Nigeria,  Peoples Democratic Party, Accord Party and the Peoples Party of Nigeria stated this in Ado Ekiti on Friday at a meeting organised by the INEC.
Mr. Michael Afolayan, who represented the NBA, said the lack of promotion in the commission could affect the performance of its officials.
According to him, some unscrupulous politicians in order to rig elections, can easily sway such officials.
He said, “The job of the INEC is a very sensitive one and officials of the commission must live above board. Some workers at INEC are complaining that they are not promoted, this should be looked into.  The election can be marred if INEC officials are not well taken care of.”
The state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Alhaji Halilu Pai, while reacting to this, said the commission was fair in all its dealings.
He said such problem was inevitable, especially in an organisation that was going through restructuring.
The Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, Mr. Udodo Adat, blamed politicians for the heavy presence of security personnel around polling booths during elections.
