FLOODING : LASG Allays Fears Of Residents

Lagos State Government has appealed to residents not to panic over the rainfalls recorded so far in the state and the attendant flooding, saying the state government has put in place measures to curtail its effects.
The Lagos state commissioner for Environment Mr.Tunji Bello who stated this at the weekend while monitoring the mid rain cleaning programme along Lagos Island, Mainland and Victoria Island axis urged the residents to be calm as whatever flash flood recorded during the rains will  be temporary.
Bello said the floods will disappear as soon as the rain stops, pointing out that the Ministry of the Environment has cleaned and dredged many primary and secondary channels across the state in preparation for this years rains.
The Commissioner assured Lagos residents that the state Government will sustain its all year maintenance and cleaning programmes to ensure that  major canals and channels are kept clean to allow free flow and discharge of storm water whenever it rains.
It will be recalled that the Lagos State Government alerted Lagosians earlier in the year that the state is to
experience rains of high intensity with accompanied thunderstorms.
“As a responsible and proactive Government, we have put in place deliberate preventive plans and programmes , to ensure that  the incidence of flooding is reduced to the barest minimum,  despite  global climatic occurrences which has made  coastal states across the world   susceptible to flooding,” he added.
The Commissioner further reminded  Lagosians who reside along the coast Lines, Lagoons, low line areas like kuramo beach, alpha beach, okun mapo, owode elede, ikorodu, badia, ijora, ajegunle and other low line areas to be ready to relocate when the intensity of the rains becomes severe, saying the state is not ready for any causality during the rainy period.
He  explained that the counseling actions became necessary following predictions by meteorologists that more rains are likely to be recorded this year.
Bello urged the residents to relate effectively with deployed Resident Engineers and Drainage maintenance officers whose phone numbers have been made public in the print and electronic media for members of the public to alert them whenever they have flooding challenges.
The Commissioner  explained that Lagos as a coastal state is susceptible to flash flood anytime it rains, soliciting for the support of residents in ensuring that waste generated are properly disposed
He charged them to ensure they patronize Lagos State Waste Management Authourity (LAWMA) and accredited PSP Operators, appealing to the general public to desist from dumping waste into canals and building along drainage paths.
